Protecting Our Seas: Altan’s Journey and Vision for a Cleaner Future

Marine pollution is one of our most urgent environmental issues, endangering marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Tackling this crisis requires both individual and collective action. Altan Aybaş, our dedicated volunteer and a 22-year-old Underwater Technologies student from Sinop University, actively addressed this challenge. Through his participation in our project, he engaged in hands-on conservation efforts, raised awareness about marine pollution, and advocated for sustainable solutions. This article explores his journey, experiences, and vision for a cleaner and healthier future."

A Personal Commitment to Marine Conservation and Volunteering

Altan joined this project to raise awareness about marine pollution and become a more environmentally conscious individual. He explains, “Studying Underwater Technologies has shown me how vital it is to protect our seas. Through this project, I wanted to take an active role in the field and contribute to real solutions.” He also saw the European Solidarity Corps as an opportunity to meet new people, gain fresh perspectives, and deepen his understanding of environmental issues."

Collaboration and Action

Altan participated in a variety of field activities, including coastal cleanups and waste collection from the sea. He also attended workshops on the causes and solutions of marine pollution, where he shared valuable insights. Furthermore, he played an active role in awareness-raising initiatives to promote environmental consciousness. Reflecting on his experience, Altan highlights the importance of group work. "Collaborating with people from different countries and disciplines allowed me to gain diverse perspectives. Working together toward a shared goal strengthened our team spirit and deepened our commitment to the project. Each participant contributed their unique skills and knowledge, making the work more effective and meaningful," he states.

The power of Responsibility and Teamwork

Altan shares his thoughts on the project, stating, On a personal level, he emphasizes that the experience helped him understand the

value of teamwork, the power of cultural interaction, and the importance of being proactive about environmental awareness. He adds, "Working with people from different countries for a common cause has improved my communication skills and helped me gain a more sensitive perspective on environmental issues. This experience inspired me to contribute more to environmental projects in

the future.”

Lessons for the future: The importance of collective action

Altan emphasizes that protecting the future of the Black Sea requires urgent and coordinated action. He believes that improving waste management and recycling systems is a crucial first step. Municipalities, businesses, and individuals must take greater responsibility to prevent plastic and chemical waste from polluting the sea.

He also points to the need to address industrial and agricultural pollution. Stricter regulations should be enforced to prevent factories from dumping waste into the sea, and sustainable production methods must be encouraged. "Reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture is essential to minimize harmful substances entering the marine ecosystem," Altan adds.

According to Altan, strengthening fisheries and marine conservation policies is equally important.

Preventing overfishing is necessary to maintain ecological balance, and expanding protected areas in the Black Sea will help safeguard marine habitats.

Finally, he stresses the importance of environmental education and awareness. “People need to understand that keeping the seas clean is not just an environmental issue but also a matter of economic and social well-being. Altan believes that governments, civil society organizations, and individuals must work together to create lasting change.”

Altan’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how one person’s dedication can make a significant difference in the fight for marine conservation. Through his commitment and actions, he continues to inspire others to join the movement for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
